Chris Bannister to Return to the Beggar’s this Week!

Posted on: October 16, 2018 in the category latest by Cassie Day

The real spirit of the music of John Denver is captured beautifully by Chris Bannister. Chris has been touring with his solo show since 2010 and, having performed around the world, he is now internationally applauded for his delivery of some of the best songs ever written.

An evening with Chris Bannister is an evening of rare quality.  Whether it is showcasing the exceptional talent of this singer-songwriter with his self-penned collection of songs, his covers of much-loved classics or undiscovered folk songs or his simply stunning tribute to the music of John Denver, it is easy to see how he has gained an international reputation which has delighted fans for over two decades.

Chris was honoured to be asked to perform in Colorado in October 2012 for the annual celebration of John Denver’s life and work, and performed several concerts with Steve Weisberg who was John Denver’s lead guitar player on all his ‘70s platinum albums.

This show is a true tribute to the music genius of John Denver and as Weisberg says about Chris’s performances: “…all the magic is there.”

A contemporary take on traditional stories from all over the world, this unique show sees Fairy Tales and modern life collide! Audiences are entertained, inspired and transported through an exciting, fast-paced reinvention of traditional theatre, technology and spoken word.

Meet Scarlet, as she reinvents the childhood stories told to her by her nan, makes sense of an increasingly challenging world and shapes her future path in her own unique way.

‘Common Lore’ has live electronic music, spoken word, drama, movement and projections.

“Inventive, engaging and fast-paced. Loved your spoken word. I found the stories really intriguing and interesting and engaging.”

The Beggar’s Theatre.  “Raising the Bar – Bigger and Better”

Moore Arts: Millom and The Beggar’s Theatre are ecstatic to announce the news of new funding of  £43,425. With huge thanks to Copeland Community Fund for £24,725 and £14,600 from Sir John Fisher Foundation together with remaining funds brought in by ourselves through revenue and kind donations, we are able to upgrade our current light and sound equipment throughout and advertise for a technician 16 hours per week for 18 month contract.

This funding has come at the perfect time. As you may be aware, The Beggar’s Theatre is named so due to the way in which we began. Begging!

The plan to set up a theatre wasn’t actually a plan, it was created, developed and built by a rather mad woman who believed in just enjoying “seeing what happened”. As a result funding from Cumbria Community Foundation was our original source of £12k to clean up the old nightclub “Johnny B’s”  and make use of the building as a Youth Theatre venue. This will be 10 years ago next year.

Our programming has grown from the odd comedy night to top quality Live Music, Touring Theatre and the best in the business TV names in Stand-Up Comedy, as well as Children’s Theatre, Panto, and Charity Events.

We began with limited second hand equipment and built a semi-decent set-up, however, in order to grow and develop, to bring in more variety, bigger names, better shows, then we needed a better specification.

In August we will be upgrading our little Theatre, using this much appreciated funding award but also we are going to give the theatre a face lift. In true Beggar’s Spirit, we are also looking for your help. Any volunteers to help build , plumb, paint, clean or offer any materials to help us along our way, would be most dearly appreciated.

We are a charity run, community venue. We offer a central hub for all our community members from Youth Theatre starting from age 2 years, to adults Creative Writing;  a venue for Charity Events to local Cinema for all, bringing top names to our local town.

A huge, huge thank you to Copeland Community Fund and Sir John Fisher Foundation for their belief and support in our venture. Our commitment to them and to our town, to you, is to be “Bigger and Better – to Raise the Bar” by bringing more variety and top quality acts to the area and to work with more young people here in the Millom area, offering more opportunities to use the theatre and facilities to build confidence, learn new skills, and discover the theatre and arts.

P.s.  I do remember announcing that if we get the funding, I will cartwheel down Wellington Street!  So….. always true to my word.  Let’s do it Saturday 7th July 11 am.

If you would like to get involved in any way, please come and see us, or get in touch,

T:  01229 775677

Thank you

Elvis The Legend On Tour

Elvis The Legend On Tour is the UK’s latest and most exciting hit new concert show – starring the world’s leading Elvis impersonator & tribute artist JD KING.

A musical journey through all eras of the King’s incredible career, Elvis The Legend On Tour features Elvis’ greatest and most-memorable hits; from ground-breaking 1950s Rock ‘n’ Roll to the dramatic Las Vegas big-band ballads of the 1970s.

An interactive and high-energy event, the show boasts JD’s powerful vocals, pulsating dance moves and a truly uncanny characterisation of Elvis that not only leaves audiences utterly amazed, but thoroughly entertained and immersed throughout the performance.

ELVIS THE LEGEND is an incredibly scale-able event, that features first-class musicianship in the form of THE BURNING LOVE BAND and the SWEET SOUL SINGERS (in larger arenas, 400 plus seats) – or for more intimate venues, fully-orchestrated custom backing track music developed in tandem with Elvis’ original band, carefully designed and mastered to re-create the same atmosphere of the King’s incredible shows at any concert venue, large or small.

Combined with JD KING, the most prolific young Elvis impersonator in a generation, this Elvis extravaganza is not to be missed…

“Since his appearance at Tribfest 2017, we’ve had so many conversations, messages, emails, and texts saying how good he was. We just had to get him back! We’re pleased to announce that JD King’s Elvis will headline the Main Stage at Tribfest 2018 on Saturday 18th August 2018.” TribFest Music Festival.

“JD Sounded and looked the part completely, the impersonation was excellent and for the audience here at the Phoenix it was like they were stepping back in time for a performance from the King! Looking forward to his return next year!” The Phoenix Theatre

“Wow!!! What a great night’s entertainment. Absolutely brilliant from start to finish. Great voice, great personality and (as a longstanding fan of Elvis) I could hear that JD has got all the little nuances just about spot on.” The Fisher Theatre

“★★★★★ Critics’ choice – and the one to watch” Time Out

“★★★★★ Devereaux’s voice was exceptional – he is brilliant – a must see!” Fringe Review

“Having grown up with the king, just below God and above Tchaikovsky, when I saw Jim I knew Elvis was back in the building.” Kim Wilde

JD King will be performing on the 12th of May, at 8:00pm. Tickets are £20.00, and are available on our website, over the phone at 01229 775677, or in house Monday to Friday, 10am – 5pm. We hope to see you there.

In September 2006, Steve was diagnosed with Pseudomyxoma Peritonei a rare form of Cancer, he was told that he would not see his two children grow up; he was given months to live. He underwent a major operation in Basingstoke Hospital and tumours were removed from his abdomen. After surgery Steve was transferred to The Christie Hospital in Manchester for chemotherapy treatment to try to control the remaining disease.

The concept of undertaking fund-raising took shape in August 2007, after Steve was Guest of Honour at a Wigan Supporters versus St.Helens Supporters Charity Rugby League match. The game signified the starting point of the Steve Prescott Foundation, with two organisations close to his own heart set to receive the benefits of his own fund-raising activities:
