The Beggar’s Theatre. “Raising the Bar – Bigger and Better”
Moore Arts: Millom and The Beggar’s Theatre are ecstatic to announce the news of new funding of £43,425. With huge thanks to Copeland Community Fund for £24,725 and £14,600 from Sir John Fisher Foundation together with remaining funds brought in by ourselves through revenue and kind donations, we are able to upgrade our current light and sound equipment throughout and advertise for a technician 16 hours per week for 18 month contract.
This funding has come at the perfect time. As you may be aware, The Beggar’s Theatre is named so due to the way in which we began. Begging!
The plan to set up a theatre wasn’t actually a plan, it was created, developed and built by a rather mad woman who believed in just enjoying “seeing what happened”. As a result funding from Cumbria Community Foundation was our original source of £12k to clean up the old nightclub “Johnny B’s” and make use of the building as a Youth Theatre venue. This will be 10 years ago next year.
Our programming has grown from the odd comedy night to top quality Live Music, Touring Theatre and the best in the business TV names in Stand-Up Comedy, as well as Children’s Theatre, Panto, and Charity Events.
We began with limited second hand equipment and built a semi-decent set-up, however, in order to grow and develop, to bring in more variety, bigger names, better shows, then we needed a better specification.
In August we will be upgrading our little Theatre, using this much appreciated funding award but also we are going to give the theatre a face lift. In true Beggar’s Spirit, we are also looking for your help. Any volunteers to help build , plumb, paint, clean or offer any materials to help us along our way, would be most dearly appreciated.
We are a charity run, community venue. We offer a central hub for all our community members from Youth Theatre starting from age 2 years, to adults Creative Writing; a venue for Charity Events to local Cinema for all, bringing top names to our local town.
A huge, huge thank you to Copeland Community Fund and Sir John Fisher Foundation for their belief and support in our venture. Our commitment to them and to our town, to you, is to be “Bigger and Better – to Raise the Bar” by bringing more variety and top quality acts to the area and to work with more young people here in the Millom area, offering more opportunities to use the theatre and facilities to build confidence, learn new skills, and discover the theatre and arts.
P.s. I do remember announcing that if we get the funding, I will cartwheel down Wellington Street! So….. always true to my word. Let’s do it Saturday 7th July 11 am.
